This book is about the game of golf. It contains a critical view of the game and the rules which define it. It is now in the Library of the USGA Museum in Far Hills, NJ. DETAILS: The author has a keen interest in the game of golf, and in particular its rules. After playing avidly for many decades, his book presents a unique view of the game; it is a critique of golf and its rules and underlying principles, as well as a compendium of pertinent information and dialog related to the game. It is not a "how-to", explanatory book on how to improve one's game (with the exception regarding his discussion of etiquette on the course.) The book contains much regarding the game. The first chapter takes a look at golf today and how it got that way. Chapter 2 presents the many games of golf, not just the way the pros play. The mystery of handicap indexes is explained in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 discusses the principles as given by the USGA publications on the subject, a rarely treated topic. The largest chapter is an analysis of occurrences where the rules have affected many famous golfers in important competitions. It contains discussion of the intent of the rules, their interpretations, and remedies to either rewrite or eliminate them. Much of the book can be considered individual articles which could be perused independently, as seen in the listing of subtopics in the table of contents. The author's goal is to promote much needed changes in the rules, and generate a dialog concerning a separate set of rules for recreational golf. The USGA Rule book is over 200 pages long, plus the set of Rulings based on the rules is over 700 pages. It's hard to find one golfer in a hundred who has read the rules. The last chapter of the book demonstrates how a set of rules can be relatively brief yet maintain most of the time-honored principles we expect. So have a look and see that much of the content will surely be food for thought. There are likely many golfers who have questioned things as the author has, and would speak up when given the opportunity. The author wishes to promote a better game for all to enjoy. In order to do this, golfers must become aware of their options. So this book was created to help accomplish this. SUMMARY: So experience the unique perspective this book provides of the wonderful game so many enjoy. It is intended to make you think about the rules, and not merely accept them, nor ignore them. Given enough grass roots support for change, maybe some of the problem areas discussed can be remedied.
